February 2022 saw the Aurora trio return to Kent to perform a wide ranging programme of music for flute, viola and harp including my trio, Pásame por Dios Barquero for Sittingbourne Music Society. http://www.sittingbournemusicsociety.com/ I wrote the piece in the 1990s: I had not long finished studying and was asked to write some incidental music for a performance of the Renaissance Spanish Boat Plays for at the Gate Theatre. One of the most memorable lecturers at Cambridge during my degree had been Tess Knighton, an inspiring music historian with a passion for the golden age of Spanish music during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. https://tessknighton.com/
The Cancionero de Palacio, a repository of some 450 fifteenth century polyphonic songs, was something I remember exploring during this time and it has been a source of inspiration ever since. Pásame por Dios, Barquero is a villancico by Pedro de Escobar which features in this collection and I used it as the basis for my incidental music for the play. This arrangement was made for the Aurora Trio.
