I was delighted to be commissioned by the ever busy Society of Recorder players. I’ve always loved the recorder. One of my primary school teachers believed that most of the world’s problems could be solved by three things: multiplication tables, Scottish country dancing [an unusual choice for a school on the south coast] and learning to play the recorder. I seem to remember everyone learnt and masking music together in groups was the norm. Without this experience, I doubt I’d have become a composer so I remember Mrs Sopp and the recorder fondly.
A Little Book of Proverbs is in 8 movements, each based on a proverb or unusual turn of phrase, The collection grows from a solo movement [a lone tenor recorder player who is trying to lead a stubborn horse to water] to a grand octet, a fairground rumpus involving a chase and a wild goose.
